Solana Labs has announced the launch of the Solana Mobile Stack ecosystem for Android. It also announced Saga, its upcoming Android smartphone.

Solana Mobile Stack (SMS) is an open-source software kit. It enables the development of native Android apps on the Solana blockchain. The kit is already available for developers.

SMS comes with several notable features. The Mobile Wallet Adapter protocol allows users to connect their Solana wallets to all kinds of mobile devices, and not just the Android ones. Seed Vault is software that secures seed phrases, private keys, and other sensitive information on Android devices. Finally, Solana Pay for Android allows for mobile payments made via the Solana platform.

The SMS will enable new functionality. This includes: easier mobile transactions on Solana, minting of NFT assets from anywhere, wider-spread access to Solana’s DeFi protocols, and more ways to play Solana-based video games.

A new Solana dApp store for mobile devices will also be available. It will provide access to Web3 wallets and applications built on Solana. There will be no fees.

Moreover, in order to help facilitate the spread of Solana mobile applications, Solana will release its own Android smartphone, called Saga. This device will feature top-tier components. These include Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, 6.67” OLED display, 12 GB RAM, and 512 GB of storage. It will have an in-built hardware module that will support the Seed Vault feature and help to keep the users’ private information safe from attackers.

Saga is set to release in early 2023. It is expected that the device will have a retail price of about $1000.
